Is the attic in your house a dumping ground for a mishmash of whatever you can stash up there? With a little bit of work you can repurpose the space and untap its storage potential. If the opening access in the ceiling is a small hole consider opening the access and installing attic stairs. To take full advantage of the space add a simple floor. Keep the area well ventilated with the addition of a solar attic fan and insulation.
Here's a rundown of basic improvements to transform the space up there into an accessible, dry and ventilated storage area, a great improvement for any attic. Follow the links to the projects with information about what's involved and learn how much it costs to do it yourself compared with hiring a contractor.

TIP: Before you make any of these improvements look for gaps where air from the attic can infiltrate to living spaces. If there's an attic stairs and door access use an insulating foam sealant like Great Stuff to fill the space between the frame and the joists in the attic.
