U.S. Homeowners Admit They're Unprepared

Are you prepared for a power outage and weather disaster at your house? Most homeowners are not ready to survive days without power and water. Here are recent survey results and what to do about it.

Cummins Home Generators recently surveyed 1,000 hurricane and power outage sufferers and found that a staggering 75% wished they were more prepared and said they experienced significant inconveniences and financial setbacks. Fifty-one percent said that they had to leave their home for to stay at hotels or with family or friends. Of those that stayed in hotels, 72% had to stay a few nights to a week at an average cost of $528. Not surprisingly, 45% of homeowners suffered damage to their homes with an average cost of $3,743. recently surveyed 1,000 hurricane and power outage sufferers and found that a staggering 75% wished they were more prepared. That's a sobering thought, isn't it? With the recent hurricane in the Carolinas knocking out power to over 600K+ people, it's time we all thought about how to prepare for storms in the future, including winter storms that can knock out power for days, even weeks.

Here are more of the survey results:

66% of respondents wish they had back-up power for their house. 52% wished they had more food and water and 48% desired flashlights, batteries and phone chargers.

Hurricanes and power outages also caused disruption to people’s lives with 64% of those that work responded that they had to take an average of six days off. Of the respondents with kids, 79% missed an average of seven days of school. Three in four (75%) that their social lives were impacted.
