Step 2 : Apply a finish
Give the wood panels a light sanding before staining or painting. If you plan to paint the shutters, first apply a primer that's compatible with the paint for the best results. Apply the finish and let it dry.
Step 3 : Fasten the panels together
Read the hardware installation instructions to properly locate the hinges and space the panels. Place a thin piece of cardboard between the shutter panels and align them carefully at the bottom and top. Use a pencil to mark the hardware location and then drill pilot holes for the screws at these points. Use a screwdriver to tighten the screws.
Step 4 : Install the shutters
Position the shutters in the window with cardboard spacers and mark the hinge location. Then drill pilot holes for the screws at these points on the window jamb.
Remove the shutters if you have to make adjustments. Trim areas that bind with sandpaper or a block plane.
