Today's choices in vinyl flooring can be staggering. You’ll find that some of the hottest new designs mimic natural materials slate, travertine, quartz and stone patterns, even cork, leather and sisal designs all with a subtle surface texture and feel. This is clearly not your mother’s vinyl flooring. Budget-wise, you can’t beat these sheet vinyls for an economical, low-maintenance floor covering that provides years of service.

The condition of the existing floor and what's beneath it is an important consideration. For the best installation, the floor requires a level subfloor and underlayment. If there are multiple layers of flooring, they have to be removed, a grunt job you might want to tackle.

You’ll find the material sold at flooring, design and home centers, where you can get an estimate for an installed price or for material only. An installation for a good quality vinyl floor in a 10-by-12-foot room will cost $722, which includes the labor and material. You can buy the material and install it yourself for $465, assuming you have carpentry experience and tools. That's a 35 percent saving.

To install new sheet flooring under doorways you may have to trim down the doorway molding so the flooring material can be easily slipped under it. To do that, get a piece of heavy cardboard that is the same thickness of the new flooring. Lay it down on the floor and slide it beneath the molding. Then lay a carpenter's saw on top of the cardboard and slide the saw blade underneath the bottom of the molding. Slowly saw off the excess wood from the bottom of the molding until there's enough room for the new flooring material instead of the cardboard.

If the room is odd shaped, with built-ins or tricky corners that require precision cuts, hire an installer because there’s no saving if you make a mistake cutting the material and have to replace it. (If you want to do it yourself, choose 12-inch square tiles, which are easier to handle than a large vinyl sheet.)
