If you have a room or area of the house that needs more heat than your heating system delivers, consider adding a convection heater mounted on the wall. You can warm up a bathroom or drafty bedroom that’s just too chilly on a winter morning by installing a ceramic flat panel unit plugged into a nearby electric outlet. The unit generates heat behind the panel or between the panel and the wall and does an efficient job of naturally distributing the heat throughout the room. When space is at a premium it’s a particularly good solution because it doesn’t take up any floor space.

A contractor will install the heater for $228, which includes the unit and installation, but you can do it yourself for $140, the cost of the heater. The installation is straightforward. For the best results, mount the heater about 6 inches above the floor molding and install with a 3/4-inch gap between the wall and the unit. You will need a carpenter’s level, drill and screwdriver. To assure that the unit will be level, use the holes in the heater or its packing material as a template to mark the position for the four mounting holes. Install the fasteners to secure it to the wall and plug it in.
