You've never had your ducts cleaned? Well, we hadn't either until we learned dirty air ducts and ventilation systems aggravated allergies and created those dirty gray areas around heat registers. Dirty air ducts are ideal breeding grounds for mold, dust and fungi, which can then be recycled throughout the house.

A duct cleaning service has equipment that places the system under negative pressure and uses a vacuum that draws air through the system. Special brushes are inserted into the ducts to dislodge any debris and remove it. A service will charge about $448 to clean the system of a 2,000-square-foot home; it can cost more or less depending on the size and accessibility of the system, the type of duct material and the level of contamination.

For about $40, the cost of a few chimney brushes, you can do it and save 91 percent, assuming you have a shop vacuum. But it won't be a thorough cleaning by any stretch of the imagination. At best, all you can do is remove some of the heavy dust and accumulated debris from the ducts. It takes specialized equipment and a very powerful vacuum to do an effective job.

A clean, efficient system is less likely to break down, last longer and operate more efficiently, all reasons to get your ducts in a row.
