Tip: Christmas lights circuit
If you are building a house, don't close up the walls without putting in a Christmas lights circuit. I'm not sure how I thought of this, but I've never heard of anyone else doing it. I always thought it was a pain to go around to all the windows to turn off the candles at Christmas time, not to mention figuring out how to wire in the outside so it wasn't too bad to turn them on and off, so I installed a Christmas lights circuit. I ran a plug to each window on the front of the house, and extended the circuit to the porch ceiling, then I ran the circuit through the entrance closet on the way to the electrical panel. Now during the Christmas season I'm the envy of the neighborhood. When I go to bed at night, I flip the switch in the closet and all my Christmas lights go on or off at the same time!
The only thing I'd do different would be to add a plug under the fireplace mantel.
