Most of us take window screens for granted until we open a window to let a cool breeze in and become inundated with pesky insects. Older screens can become brittle and tear.

If the window is on the ground floor and easy to reach, installing a new screen is easy. However, if climbing to the second story is involved, it’s doable but dicey for the faint of heart.

A window contractor will make a new 30- by 30-inch window screen and install it for $65, which includes labor and material. You can use a window screen kit to make the screen and install it for $25, saving 61 percent. The kit is made up of lengths of aluminum for the frame, fiberglass screen mesh, a spline, and hardware designed to create square corners.

To do the job you need a measuring tape to size the screen, a hacksaw to cut the aluminum to size, and a screen mesh roller, an inexpensive tool that forces the screening into a groove in the frame.

No matter who makes the screen, first take the time to thoroughly clean the window frame and remove any dirt and debris. If the window needs painting, it’s best to do it before you install the new screen.
