When you won’t settle for anything less than a hardwood floor, consider using prefinished parquet floor tiles. The complex herringbone patterns are available in light and dark oak and offer the appeal of real wood.

Parquet tiles are the favorite flooring material in halls and foyers and a nice choice for a family room or den. Best of all, the installation process is perfectly suited for a seasoned do-it-yourselfer.

A flooring contractor will charge $1,105 to install prefinished oak parquet floor tiles in a 10-by-12-foot room, assuming the subfloor is sound and level. That includes labor and material. You can buy the tiles and adhesive for $580 and lay the floor yourself, saving 47 percent.

Don’t underestimate the time and work required to remove the existing material. It can be a grueling part of the job, but necessary to provide a sound foundation for the new floor.

Budget more time and money if a new subfloor or repair work and leveling is required. To lay the tiles figure about two days of work, which will include preparing the subfloor, removing the floor trim, laying out the tiles and cutting and fitting the tiles.

To prepare a room for a new floor, remove the base shoe molding around the room. Use a pry bar and putty knife with a hammer to gently, but firmly pull the molding away from the wall. Be careful so you can reuse it after the floor installation.

Carefully remove the nails by hammering them out of the molding from the backside so the nail comes out the front. As you remove each piece of molding, mark the backside with a marker so you know where to reinstall it. For example, ”window wall, center section”

You’ll need basic carpentry and measuring tools and a circular saw. If you don’t have kneepads, get some and save your sorry shins.
