Many historic homes and some of today’s new custom designs have stylish, distinctive elements that set them apart. A window sunburst, or pediment, is one of those elements that is a finishing touch to a house that doesn’t require cutting into the siding.

A window sunburst, an ideal window topper, is mounted on the surface of the siding and comes in a variety of colors. They can also be painted to match your exterior color scheme.

A carpenter will charge $224 to install a surface-mounted sunburst kit that fits a window 32- to 42-inches wide, which includes labor and material. You can buy the kit for $95 and install it, saving 62 percent.

To install a window sunburst, you hold it against the siding above the window and drill holes through nailing slots and then attach the back plate to the surface. The kit includes the fasteners and, since there are no exposed nails, there’s wiggle room for the holes.

You center the bottom edge of the base of the unit over the window and use siding nails to fasten it; then align the base and cut the mantel to the fit. Screw covers conceal the screws. A support block and corner assemblies at both ends strengthen the installation of the mantel with covers to hide the edges and trim out the unit.

Architectural Depot features different styles of window sunbursts here: Window Pediments.
