Painting a brick wall to some people is heresy because they think the authentic, rugged look of brick and grout adds character to a room. But others see exposed blotchy bricks as an unattractive surface. To down play the brick in a room – for whatever reason – painting it is an inexpensive trick designers have used for years, especially in commercial buildings.

You will need to wash the brick with a detergent solution, then rinse it to remove any residue and let the surface dry. Then you apply a masonry sealer or primer to prevent the porous brick from absorbing the paint and improve the paint’s adhesion.

We use a good quality latex paint for the two topcoats, the first applied with a wide brush to work the paint into the pores of the brick, followed by a final coat with a heavy nap roller.

A painting contractor will charge $205 to paint a 10-by-10-foot high wall, which includes labor and material. This is a small job, so you may have to pay more to get a painter to do it. In any case, you can do the job for $75, which includes the primer and paint – a 63 percent saving.

You may need a third coat if you’re painting the brick the same color as surrounding walls; it’ll depend on just how porous the bricks are and how much paint soaks into them.
