How much does it cost to paint a wood floor? A paint contractor charges $131 to paint a wood floor vs. doing it yourself for $55 and saving 69 percent.

We’ve always refinished our wood floors to bring out their natural beauty and good looks, but not all wood floors are meant to be refinished. Those that are already painted or made of mismatched planks pieced together are good candidates for a facelift.

Designers say a can of floor paint and a little imagination will transform a room. You can stripe a floor in contrasting shades of a color using masking tape for guidelines, and make a room appear larger. To accentuate a floor and make it the focal point, paint it a bold color. Or for a fanciful finish, strike off the room in a checkerboard pattern with masking tape, and paint the squares in contrasting colors.

A painting contractor will charge $131 to prepare and paint a 12-by-15-foot wooden floor, which includes labor and material; but you can do the job for $55, the cost of the paint, and save 69 percent.

For the best looking results, make sure the old floor is clean by giving it a good washing, and remove any wax. If there’s a high gloss finish on the floor, scuff sand it with medium grade sandpaper. Use paint designed for floors like Sherwin-William’s Waterbourne Floor Enamel, and outline the room with a brush, then use a fine nap roller on the floor surface. Another bit of advice: Two coats are better than one for a good hard surface.
