A digital version of the standard peephole viewer is now available, and it’s an improvement over the old one with fish eye distortion. The digital unit uses an LCD panel to display a large and clear image of the person on the other side of your door.
To operate, press the power button on the viewer and an undistorted image appears on the viewer screen on the inside of the door. A zoom feature lets you enlarge the center of the field of view to see facial details.
A handyman will install the digital peephole for $218, which includes the unit and labor, but you can buy it for $120 and install it, saving 44 percent. The device is designed with a do-it-yourselfer in mind. It comes with the only tool needed, a tightening tool to remove an old peephole and install the new one. There are only four parts, a peephole lens and barrel, a base flange and the viewer. The two AA batteries used to power the unit are included.
