The DIY cost to repair textured drywall is $40 compared with hiring a handyman for $210, which includes labor and material. Knockdown, popcorn, stipple drywall – however you describe a textured wall or ceiling surface – it can be repaired.

Being creative helps to repair a hole or damage to a textured aka knockdown, orange peel, or popcorn finish in a wall or ceiling. You’re trying to replicate the surface surrounding the damaged area so that it blends in and won’t be noticed and that’s not always easy.

Whatever the reason for the damage – a wayward doorknob that bangs into a wall or a hole left from replacing a light fixture – there’s a solution that doesn’t cost a lot of money or your time.

The repair is easy, even for a first-time DIYer. It involves first repairing and cleaning the hole or surface, and then applying patching compound to fill the void and sanding it smooth. If it’s a deep hole, more than one coat may be needed to build up the repaired area to be flush with the surface surrounding it.

When the hole is repaired, use a Drywall Repair Tool to match the texture of the surface around the repair. The tool is a template that comes in one of three textures: fine, medium or heavy. Place the template over the patched area and apply the compound, then remove the template to let it dry. When the compound is dry, lightly sand the area to blend in with the surrounding surface. At a home center you’ll also find sprays and sponges designed to recreate a textured surface.

You’ll need your own putty knife and sandpaper to do the job. A handyman will charge $210 to make the repair, which includes labor and material; but you can buy the materials for $40 and save 81 percent by doing it yourself. Complete the surface with a coat of paint, matching what’s there or repainting the complete wall or ceiling if you don’t have paint to match or if the paint is old and discolored.
